When the World Talks at Davos, Which Lake Does Your Sandal Want to Take You To?

by wangxiangyun 15 Jan 2026 0 comment

At this moment, in Davos. In a snow-covered mountain town, the world's attention converges. Grand dialogues about cooperation, growth, and the future are unfolding in conference halls, each word attempting to outline a clearer picture for the world.

Meanwhile, in another corner of Switzerland — perhaps one of the seven lakes in the Lucerne region, or a quiet beach along the shore of Lake Geneva — the morning light is creeping past the snow line of the Alps, dyeing the lake water a turquoise blue. Here, there is no agenda, only the ripples of a breeze skimming the water's surface; here, there are no declarations, only the subtle, satisfying whisper of bare feet meeting sun-warmed wooden planks.

This is the two sides of the Alps: one is a summit of thought, concerning the pulse of the globe; the other is a stroll for the soul, concerning only the softness beneath your feet and the boundless blue before your eyes.

We are always taught to listen to the voice of the world, yet we often forget to listen to the sound of our own footsteps. While international issues are debated and redressed on the podiums of Davos, a more intimate, more urgent question might be waiting for your answer: amidst all this noise, where is the tranquil stretch of water your heart yearns for?

Could it be the reflection of Italy's Lake Como? There, the villa gardens left by Renaissance nobles and the winding shoreline resemble an unfinished love poem, perfect for an aimless boat ride, letting thoughts scatter like the wake behind the boat. Could it be Annecy on the French border? The town known as the "Venice of the Alps," where even the flowing water seems exceptionally tender. Or perhaps, the medieval streets of Bruges in Belgium, embraced by its canals? The cobblestones after rain are like mirrors, reflecting centuries of peace.

The true "Spirit of Dialogue" perhaps begins with solitude with oneself. The purpose of a well-fitting sandal is not to take you to a predefined "must-see" destination, but to grant you the freedom to pause whenever you wish. When you take it off by an unnamed lake, letting the cool water wash over your ankles, in that moment, your connection to this land, to this instant, is far more direct and real than any complex agenda.

We talk about a sustainable future, and the most sustainable travel might be an arrival of depth, not breadth. It's not about collecting place names, but about collecting sensations — the temperature of sunlight your skin remembers, the texture of gravel your soles remember, the unbridled joy you feel when the wind brushes against your feet.

So, while the spotlight in Davos illuminates global challenges and blueprints, perhaps you can temporarily turn your gaze inward and ask yourself: where does my sandal want to take me right now?

To explore the improbable, cerulean blue of Lake Cauma in Switzerland's LAAX region, or to feel the cool moisture by the ancient palace waterways in Spain's Granada? To move towards the crowd, or towards a shoreline that belongs solely to you?

The answer isn't in any guidebook. It lies in the impulse you feel when you lift your foot, ready to take the next step. The best journey is always the story co-written by a pair of shoes that lets you forget the mileage and remember only the scenery, and a heart that longs for freedom.

The world is vast, the issues are weighty. But sometimes, the quiet of a small lakeshore is enough to hold all contemplation. Your lake is waiting.
